For a long time artists and art-lovers of South Transdanubia and County Somogy dreamed of a faculty of arts to serve as a locus for artistic activity in the region. In 2004 this dream became a reality at the dynamically expanding Kaposvár University. Though still young, this faculty is already well on its way to becoming an intellectual centre for art of all sorts. It is dedicated to preserving and building upon the artistic heritage of such famous Kaposvár painters as Rippl-Rónai and Vaszary and to fostering talents in other artistic fields such as acting; it serves the renowned theatrical workshop of the Csiky Gergely Theater.
Young, dynamically developing, open, receptive—the Faculty of Arts and Theatre is living life to its fullest and producing art that expresses it. Bohemian, creative students improve their skills as actors, photographers, web-designers, graphic designers, sculptors, painters, picture animators, art mediators, and more as they learn the ropes of the professional art world.
The Faculty of Arts provides artistic education of the highest standard. The unique majors and programmes mentioned above are taught by teachers honoured with many prestigious prizes. The members of the staff (media artists, designers, actors, photographers, choreographers, musicians, stage and costume designer artists, artists, industrial artists, directors, dramaturges, critics, , art psychologists, art-, photo-, music-, education-, and art historians) are well-known inside and outside Hungary. Their theatre performances, stage direction, set and costume designs, their works of art in various styles and techniques, exhibitions and publications are all outstanding. Several staff members have been honoured with the highest national artistic awards (examples include the Kossuth, Munkácsy, Jászai, and Balázs Béla awards).
Members of the staff include graduates from Dutch, German and Romanian universities; other members have enriched their knowledge at universities and workshops in Russia, Norway, Italy, Croatia and the United States. Many of them are active members of international trade organizations and associations. Lovers of art can see examples of their work on proud display all over the world. Besides their creative work, our artist-teachers pursue diverse activities such as curating national and international events, organizing research forums and symposia, and holding master courses.
A special infrastructure helps training in all academic specialisations:
In addition to pieces by faculty and international artists, the galleries and exhibition halls of Kaposvár University proudly display students' work, helping to launch them in the professional world. The acting students’ performances are extremely popular all over the country.
Our students participate in exhibitions, biennials, festivals, and conferences at home and abroad. They work for newspapers, television, and radio broadcasters. They design and create sets and costumes. They perform on stage at the Theatre of Kaposvár, in theatres in Budapest, and abroad. Their success in all these endeavors has won them prizes at numerous art festivals and competitions. Photos on the front page of The New York Times, leading roles, enchanting stage sets and fancy dresses, prestigious prizes, and professional respect are the fruits of the talents they cultivate at Faculty of Arts of Kaposvár University.
The students’ perspective and international viability improve through studies in English and German languages and courses held by artists and researchers from several countries. These guest lecturers give the students professional insight, help them make the first steps into their careers, and, through their varied backgrounds, diversify the students' education. The Faculty of Arts also puts its students in contact with international creative camps in Hungary and abroad, professional institutions, and other universities in countries near and far. Co-operative relations with The Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava, University of Theatrical Arts of Targu Mures, Kütahya Dumlupinar University in Turkey, and Burapha University in Thailand bring visiting professors from all parts of the world and provide both undergraduates and teachers the chance to study, introduce themselves, and exhibit their works abroad.
The Department of Motion Pictures maintains good relations and has running contracts with several institutions in Moscow, such as the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, the All-Russian State University of Cinematography, and one of the most significant film periodicals, ”Киноведческие записки”.
The faculty is exceptionally keen on expanding its national and international relations and continuously looks for opportunities to open the world for its students.
